The Art of Impermanence: Elsa Carvalho’s Fusion of Code, AI, and Human Creativity

by Carlo Borloni

In a world where the digital and physical increasingly converge, Elsa Carvalho's work serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between technology and humanity. Her latest collection, tran•sience, explores impermanence and transformation, themes that have long captivated philosophers, artists, and poets. Through her innovative use of AI and creative coding, Carvalho bridges the mechanical precision of algorithms with the organic fluidity of nature, creating works that are as thought-provoking as they are visually mesmerizing. Carvalho’s journey is unconventional but emblematic of contemporary artistic evolution. As a software engineer with a natural affinity for the creative process, she began experimenting with visual art in 2021, driven by a desire to explore new forms of self-expression. This fusion of technical expertise and artistic curiosity has since become the cornerstone of her practice. "It felt natural to explore creative coding as a way to merge my technical skills with my curiosity for artistic expression," she reflects. Her practice has grown to embrace AI, a medium that introduces an element of serendipity and spontaneity to her otherwise meticulously crafted visuals.

Celebrating Change Through tran•sience

tran•sience, a collection of 32 audiovisual pieces divided into six acts, is a meditation on the ephemeral nature of life. Each act offers a seamless interplay of visuals and soundscapes, inviting viewers into a multisensory experience that captures the beauty and inevitability of transformation. The visual language of the collection is deeply rooted in Carvalho’s innovative coding practices. Beginning with custom JavaScript scripts in Emprop Open Studio, she generates abstract images that serve as the foundation for AI-driven enhancements. This blend of algorithmic structure and machine learning spontaneity results in visuals that pulse with organic fluidity despite their technological origins. Central to the project is the concept of impermanence. Carvalho describes this theme as a reflection of life’s constant flux, growth, decay, and renewal. "Impermanence is one of the most fundamental truths of life, and it’s endlessly fascinating," she explains. This fascination manifests in her work through fluid morphing movements, transitions that feel both inevitable and unexpected, echoing the rhythms of nature. The result is a body of work that does not merely depict change but embodies it, offering viewers a sense of interconnectedness and continuity.

The Role of Collaboration in Creating Immersion

While the visuals in tran•sience are undeniably compelling, the auditory dimension elevates the collection to a new level. Bruno Miranda’s original compositions serve as an emotional counterpart to Carvalho’s visuals, weaving soundscapes that mirror the ebb and flow of transformation. Each act’s music is crafted to resonate with its unique thematic focus, creating a cohesive narrative that engages the senses on multiple levels. This collaboration underscores Carvalho’s belief in the power of interdisciplinary approaches to enrich artistic expression.

Merging Technology and Art

Carvalho’s work exemplifies the creative potential of AI when wielded as a tool rather than a replacement for human ingenuity. Her process is a testament to this philosophy. Beginning with code-generated images, she refines them using AI tools like the Luma Dream Machine to introduce motion and depth. The resulting videos, each lasting 22 seconds, evoke a sense of timelessness while remaining firmly rooted in the present. This interplay of human direction and machine-generated unpredictability challenges traditional notions of authorship, inviting viewers to reconsider what it means to create. This technological aspect of Carvalho’s practice also raises broader questions about the role of AI in contemporary art. In a time when concerns about AI replacing human creativity dominate cultural conversations, Carvalho demonstrates how these tools can amplify and extend artistic vision rather than supplant it. Her work is a reminder that, at its core, art is not about the tools we use but the stories we tell.

Act IV ~ 2, Elsa Carvalho

A Reflection on the Universal

Beyond its technical brilliance, tran•sience resonates on a deeply emotional level. Its abstract visuals and fluid transitions evoke universal themes of loss, renewal, and the passage of time. These are experiences shared by all, yet uniquely felt by each individual. Carvalho’s ability to translate such complex ideas into a visual language that feels both personal and universal is what makes her work so compelling. "In creating this collection, I wasn’t driven by a specific goal or outcome," Carvalho notes. "It’s more of a process, one of creation, refinement, and adaptation." This openness to exploration is evident in every aspect of tran•sience, from its initial conception to its final form. It is a work that invites viewers to linger, to reflect, and to find beauty in the fleeting.

Looking Forward

As technology continues to shape the art world, artists like Elsa Carvalho are leading the charge in redefining what is possible. tran•sience is not just a collection of audiovisual pieces; it is a manifesto for embracing change, celebrating impermanence, and finding meaning in transformation. It stands as a testament to the power of art to bridge the gap between the timeless and the contemporary, reminding us that even in an era dominated by rapid technological advancement, there is still room for introspection, wonder, and connection. Through her thoughtful integration of AI and coding with human creativity, Carvalho offers a vision of art’s future that is as hopeful as it is innovative. With tran•sience, she not only invites us to contemplate the ephemeral but also challenges us to appreciate it, to find beauty in the moment, and to embrace the ever-changing nature of life itself.
