About SIGMAX

SIGMAX

Welcome to my world of art and architecture. I am Sigmax, an artist and architect based in India, with over a decade of experience in these intertwined fields. My journey has taken me across the globe, with my works displayed at notable exhibitions such as NFT NYC 2023, and shows in Brussels, Denver, and Milan.

My art delves into minimalism and neo-precisionism, exploring the relationship between architectural shapes, forms, textures, and the study of light. I strive to transform mundane settings into introspective moments, using architecture and daily life as sources of inspiration to create ambiguous scenes that resonate on a personal level.

A key element in all my works is the presence of three symbolic figures: the thinker, the creator, and the dreamer. These figures represent universal characteristics that we all possess, regardless of our profession or path in life.

My goal is to share my works across the globe, highlighting the intricate still moments from our lives and encouraging others to cherish these moments. Thank you for joining me on this journey of exploration and introspection.

Can you tell us about your early influences and how they shaped your path into both art and architecture?

My early influences were a mix of personal experiences and the environment I grew up in. I was always fascinated by color, the interplay of light and shadow, and the way buildings and spaces could evoke different emotions.

This curiosity led me to explore architecture, where I could combine my love for buildings and form with a deeper understanding of the spatial environment.

Art, on the other hand, was a more personal journey. I found solace in expressing myself through minimalistic and precise forms, which naturally aligned with my architectural sensibilities.

The works of minimalists and precisionists, who focused on the purity of form and the meticulous study of light and texture, resonated deeply with me. I constantly studied art and artists from early periods and styles, ranging from Impressionism to Precisionism and early 18th-century works on subject study.

The combination of these influences guided me toward creating works that explore the relationship between architectural shapes and forms while also delving into the emotional and introspective aspects of daily life. This blend of art and architecture allows me to capture and highlight the still, intricate moments that often go unnoticed in our fast-paced world.

Growing up and working in India, how has your cultural background influenced your artistic style and themes?

Growing up in India has had a profound impact on my artistic style and themes.

The rich tapestry of Indian culture, with its vibrant colors, diverse architectural styles, and deep-rooted traditions, has influenced my perception of space and form. Indian architecture, especially the intricate designs and the play of light and shadow in traditional buildings, has inspired me to incorporate these elements into my work.

Moreover, the everyday life and experiences in India, with its blend of the ancient and the modern, have shaped my thematic focus.

The hustle and bustle of Indian cities, contrasted with the quiet, contemplative moments found in smaller towns and villages, provide a unique perspective on life. This duality is reflected in my work, where I aim to capture the serene, still moments amidst the chaos of daily life.

Additionally, the philosophical aspects of Indian culture, such as the emphasis on introspection and the pursuit of knowledge, have influenced my exploration of themes related to personal growth and the journey of the thinker, creator, and dreamer.

These cultural elements have enriched my work, allowing me to create pieces that resonate with a sense of place and personal history.

What architectural philosophies or movements have had the most significant impact on your artistic practice?

Several architectural philosophies and movements have significantly influenced my artistic practice:Minimalism: The minimalist movement, with its focus on simplicity and the essence of form, has had a profound impact on my work. "Less is more," a famous quote by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, encapsulates the essence of minimalism in design and architecture. This philosophy emphasizes the idea that simplicity and restraint can often have a more powerful impact than excessive ornamentation or complexity.Precisionism: This movement, which emphasizes the precise depiction of architectural forms and industrial landscapes, aligns closely with my interest in the meticulous study of shapes, forms, and textures. The detailed and exact representation of structures helps me explore the beauty in everyday objects and buildings.Artist inspiration: Edward Hopper, Charles Sheeler, Ralston Crawford, Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Demuth, George Ault, Joseph Stella. The modern term “Neo-Precisionism,” coined and mentioned a couple of times in the recent web3 art spaces by GrantYun through his works, which I deeply admire and respect. Artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Monet, and Vermeer have influenced a lot in my artistic journey; the use of color, brush strokes, and depiction of life on a deeper level. Studying about them and their work has had a profound impact on what I create and what I want to express or share with the world.

Can you share more about your journey and how your experiences influenced the creation of "Echoes of Growth"?

"Echoes of Growth" is a deeply personal collection, inspired by my formative years and the journey of self-discovery and growth during that time.

The experiences I had while studying away from home, living in hostels, and navigating the challenges of academic life played a crucial role in shaping this collection.

Hostel Life: The sense of camaraderie, shared struggles, and moments of solitude in the hostel environment became a significant influence. The close quarters and communal living spaces provided a unique perspective on personal space and how it impacts our daily lives.

This is reflected in the intimate and detailed depictions of dorm rooms and study areas in "Echoes of Growth".

Moments of Learning and Inspiration: The collection also draws from the small, yet significant moments of inspiration that came from interacting with peers, mentors, and the world around me. Whether it was a late-night conversation with a fellow student, a lecture that sparked a new idea, or quiet reflection in a campus garden.

Nostalgia and Growth: A key theme in "Echoes of Growth" is nostalgia. The collection reflects on the bittersweet memories of those formative years, acknowledging the growth that came from the struggles and triumphs of that period.

The use of light and shadow, the careful composition of space, and the inclusion of personal objects and mementos in the artworks are all meant to evoke a sense of wistful reflection and appreciation for that journey

Your work often includes the symbolic figures of the thinker, the creator, and the dreamer. How do these figures manifest in this new collection, and what do they represent in the context of formative years?

In "Echoes of Growth", the symbolic figures of the thinker, the creator, and the dreamer are woven into the narrative to represent the multifaceted journey of personal development during the formative years.

The Thinker Manifestation: The thinker is often depicted in scenes of contemplation and reflection. The thinker might be portrayed sitting alone in a library or a secluded corner of a dorm room, deep in thought.

Representation: In the context of formative years, the thinker represents the pursuit of knowledge and the introspective process of understanding oneself and the world.

It embodies the intellectual challenges and the critical thinking required in academic and personal growth. The thinker's presence highlights the importance of introspection and the quest for deeper understanding during this period.

The Creator Manifestation: The creator is depicted in action, engaged in the process of making or creating.

Representation: The creator symbolizes the practical application of knowledge and skills, the act of bringing ideas to life. During formative years, this figure represents the development of technical abilities and the creative problem-solving that is essential in both academic and personal contexts.

The creator underscores the importance of hands-on experience and the tangible results of hard work and creativity.

The Dreamer Manifestation: The dreamer appears in scenes that evoke imagination and future aspirations. This figure might be shown gazing out of a window, dreaming of future possibilities, or lost in thought while exploring new environments.

The dreamer can be depicted in moments of inspiration, surrounded by elements that spark creativity and wonder.

Representation: The dreamer represents hope, ambition, and the vision of what could be. In the context of formative years, the dreamer embodies the aspirations and dreams that drive individuals forward. It highlights the role of imagination and the desire to explore new horizons.

In "Echoes of Growth", these three figures are interwoven into various pieces to create a cohesive narrative. They represent the different facets of the journey through formative years, each playing a crucial role in personal and professional development.

How does your background in architecture shape your artistic approach, particularly in this collection which heavily features architectural forms and textures?

My background in architecture deeply informs my artistic approach, particularly in "Echoes of Growth", which prominently features architectural forms and textures. Here's how it shapes my work:

Precision and Detail Application: In "Echoes of Growth", this translates to careful and deliberate compositions. The artworks feature detailed renderings of architectural elements, such as dorm rooms, study spaces, and communal areas, highlighting their structural intricacies.

Understanding of Space Artistic Application: This understanding is evident in how I portray scenes in the collection. The spatial arrangements in my pieces are designed to evoke specific emotions and narratives.

For example, the tight, intimate spaces of a dorm room might convey a sense of introspection and solitude, while larger, open areas can evoke collaboration and shared experiences.

Use of Light and Shadow Artistic Application: In my artwork, I use light and shadow to create depth, highlight textures, and evoke moods. The play of light across architectural surfaces in "Echoes of Growth" brings attention to the materials and forms, creating a dynamic visual experience.

Materiality and Texture Artistic Application: This knowledge allows me to depict textures accurately and meaningfully. In the collection, the textures of walls, floors, and furniture are rendered with a focus on their tactile qualities, enhancing the realism and emotional impact of the scenes.

Conceptual Framework Artistic Application: Similarly, "Echoes of Growth" is built around the conceptual framework of personal and intellectual growth.

The architectural elements serve not just as backgrounds but as integral parts of the story, reflecting the journey of the thinker, creator, and dreamer.

How does this collection explore the intersection between personal and collective experiences during formative years?

"Echoes of Growth" delves into the intersection between personal and collective experiences during formative years by highlighting the shared environments and moments that shape individual journeys.

Here's how the collection explores this intersection:

Common Spaces, Shared Stories Depiction: Scenes of dorm rooms, study areas, and communal spaces where students interact and live together.

These shared environments serve as a backdrop for personal stories, emphasizing the common experiences that bind individuals together.

The artworks reflect how these spaces witness collective moments of learning, friendship, and growth.

Individual Reflection in a Shared Context Depiction: Intimate, introspective moments within communal settings, such as a student studying alone in a crowded library or reflecting in a quiet corner of a bustling dormitory.

These pieces highlight the personal journeys of introspection and self-discovery that occur within the broader context of shared experiences.

They underscore how individual growth is often intertwined with collective environments.

Symbols of Shared Culture and Identity Depiction: Familiar objects and symbols from academic life, such as books, notebooks, and personal mementos, are placed within communal settings.

These symbols serve as touchstones of shared culture and identity, reflecting the common experiences and aspirations of students during their formative years.

Nostalgia is a central theme in "Echoes of Growth". How do you balance the bittersweet aspects of nostalgia with the positive aspects of personal growth in your artwork?

Balancing the bittersweet aspects of nostalgia with the positive aspects of personal growth in "Echoes of Growth" involves a careful interplay of visual elements and thematic nuances. Here’s how I achieve this balance in my artwork:

Visual Elements

Warm Tones for Nostalgia: I use warm, muted colors like sepia, soft yellows, and gentle browns to evoke a sense of nostalgia. These hues can remind viewers of old photographs and evoke memories of past experiences.

Bright and Fresh Colors for Growth: Contrasting these nostalgic tones with brighter, fresher colors like vibrant greens, blues, and whites highlights moments of clarity, inspiration, and growth. This combination symbolizes the journey from past to present and the evolution that comes with it.

Soft, Diffused Light for Nostalgia: Soft, diffused lighting creates a dreamy, reflective atmosphere, enhancing the feeling of looking back on cherished memories.

Sharp, Direct Light for Growth: In contrast, sharper and more direct lighting can symbolize moments of realization and enlightenment, emphasizing the forward momentum of personal growth.

Layering and Depth: I use layering in my compositions to represent the complexity of memories. Background elements might hint at past experiences, while foreground elements focus on the present and future. This depth creates a narrative that intertwines nostalgia with growth.

Reflective Narratives: Each piece tells a story that reflects both the past and the present. By incorporating elements that hint at previous experiences and those that point towards future aspirations, I create a narrative arc that balances nostalgia with growth.

Positive Reflection: While acknowledging the bittersweet nature of looking back, the overall tone of the collection remains hopeful and forward-looking. The growth and achievements resulting from past experiences are emphasized, creating a sense of optimism and progress.

Balancing the bittersweet aspects of nostalgia with the positive aspects of personal growth in "Echoes of Growth" involves a thoughtful combination of visual elements, thematic nuances, and emotional resonance.

This approach ensures that the artwork not only honors the past but also celebrates the journey and achievements that come from personal growth.

Living away from home during one's formative years can be challenging yet rewarding. How do you capture the essence of hostel life and self-reliance in your pieces?

Capturing the essence of hostel life and self-reliance in my artwork involves depicting the unique challenges and rewards experienced during this formative period away from home.

I focus on portraying the distinct architectural features of hostels, such as shared dormitories. These details evoke a sense of shared living and the practical aspects of hostel life.

The layout of rooms and corridors in hostels influences the dynamics of daily life. I use spatial arrangements to convey a sense of intimacy and community, as well as moments of solitude that are integral to personal growth.

Depicting individual living spaces within a communal setting emphasizes the balance between privacy and shared experiences.

Each piece reflects the personalization of these spaces, where residents make them their own through decorations and personal items.

Balancing the challenges of adapting to a new environment with the rewards of personal freedom and discovery is central.

I aim to capture the resilience and resourcefulness that emerge from navigating these challenges, highlighting moments of achievement and personal triumph.

Showing students immersed in study amidst the backdrop of hostel life portrays the dedication and intellectual growth that occur in these environments.

Detailing how residents personalize their spaces with photographs, artwork, and personal items captures the individuality and sense of belonging that develops over time.

Capturing the essence of hostel life and self-reliance in my artwork involves a holistic approach that encompasses architectural details, thematic exploration of independence and community, and the emotional spectrum experienced during this transformative period away from home.

Through these visual narratives, I aim to evoke both the challenges and rewards inherent in the journey of personal growth and self-discovery.
