An interview with kolahon led by Carlo Borloni
Your artist name, Kolahon, means "Chaos", a concept that suggests transition and exploration. How has your relationship with chaos evolved over time, and how does it influence your artistic practice?
My relationship with chaos has grown from fear to acceptance. Initially, chaos felt overwhelming, a force to be avoided. However, I've come to realize that chaos is just a precursor to discovery and transformation. It influences my artistic practice by allowing me to embrace uncertainty, leading to unexpected creative avenues and richer, more dynamic works.
Your background in landscape architecture is evident in your work, both in composition and the use of space. How has this experience shaped the way you create art?
My training in landscape architecture has fundamentally shaped my understanding of space and composition. It taught me to appreciate the interplay of natural elements, scale, and perspective, which I integrate into my art. I strive to create immersive experiences, blending nature's fluidity with artistic expression, allowing viewers to traverse my imagined landscapes.
Your works often explore fluid identity through diverse characters, from Mother Gaia to internet meme figures. What fascinates you about these representations, and how do they interact within your artistic universe?
I find immense fascination in the fluidity of identity, as reflected through characters like Mother Gaia and internet memes. These representations illuminate the multifaceted nature of existence and resonate with different cultural narratives. They interact within my artistic universe to challenge fixed identities and celebrate the chaos of our evolving selves.
Your art delves into profound themes such as existence, freedom, and the relationship between self and the world. What key life experiences or influences have fueled this exploration?
My exploration of existence, freedom, and self-relationship has been fueled by deeply personal experiences, such as travel, loss, and moments of introspection. Each encounter has expanded my understanding of my place within the world, driving me to question societal norms and seek authenticity.
Your imaginary landscapes seem to serve as places of refuge and introspection. Is there a real-life place that embodies this feeling for you and has inspired your work?
One real-life place that embodies the feeling of refuge I aim to capture in my work is the serene forests of my childhood. The stillness and natural beauty of those woods served as my sanctuary and continue to inspire my imaginary landscapes, where I explore themes of safety and contemplation.
Your new collection explores the tension between sensitivity and survival. What was the initial spark that led to Echo of Sensitivity?
The initial spark for "Echo of Sensitivity" emerged from a personal realization about the often, unseen emotional struggles we all face. It became evident that sensitivity, a trait often viewed as a weakness—requires immense strength in a world that frequently demands resilience. This contrast inspired me to explore the delicate balance between vulnerability and survival.
You speak of a "mask" you wear to adapt to the world. In your paintings, how do you represent this duality between the authentic self and the adapted self?
In my paintings, I represent the duality of the authentic self and the adapted self through contrasting colors, forms, and textures. The masks I create embody various personas, while the underlying layers reflect my true essence. This allows viewers to perceive the complexity inherent in every individual, encouraging them to confront their own dualities.
The title of the collection suggests an echo, something that resonates over time. What emotion or reflection do you hope will remain with viewers after experiencing these works?
After experiencing these works, I hope viewers walk away with a sense of introspection, a reflection on their own emotions and how they resonate in their lives. I want them to understand sensitivity as a powerful force, echoing the importance of self-acceptance and interconnectedness.
The contrast between light and shadow is a recurring theme in your artistic exploration. How does it manifest in Echo of Sensitivity, and what does this duality mean to you?
Light and shadow play a critical role in "Echo of Sensitivity." They create depth, highlight contrasts, and symbolize the ongoing struggle between joy and sorrow. This duality represents the complexity of human emotion, reminding us that light often coexists with darkness, allowing for growth and understanding.
Looking ahead, how do you see your work evolving after this collection? Are there new directions you’d like to explore?
As I look ahead, I see my work evolving to further explore themes of connectivity, how our collective experiences shape identity and perception. I’m drawn to incorporating more interactive elements into my art, inviting viewers to engage with the pieces, contributing their interpretations and narratives to the ongoing dialogue.
